MORE ABOUT THE MDT

WHAT DOES MDT MEAN?
_______________

Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy

Evaluation System, which uses repeated movements or positions to find an exercise that promotes pain reduction and improves patient’s function.

Centralization

Symptoms move from the most distant área in direction to the spine line.

HOW DOES MDT WORK?
_______________

Evaluation

It has the purpose of diagnosing each particular case and giving the specialized Physical Therapist and their patient the notion of the necessary treatment time. In rare cases, the patient may not respond to mechanical treatment and, therefore, be referred.

It takes an average of three to five visits, to assess and treat the patient, with most cases resolved in the first three.

Who can be treated with the Method?

People of ALL the age groups, sedentary or athletes, with acute or chronic symptoms, who have or have not undergone previous orthopedic surgeries.

Does the Method treat only the Spine?

No. It treats spinal joint pains – cervical, thoracic or lumbar – as well as: shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand or hip, knee, ankle and foot.

Treatment Time

The average treatment time varies bewteen 1 and 3 months. Acute conditions show rapid response in the first month – 74% centralize (Manual Therapy; May et al, 2012). Younger patients, with poor postural habits, usually have simpler conditions and a chance of fast improvement, when committed to treatment.

CHRONIC SYMPTOMS DO NOT MEAN LONG TREATMENTS
_______________

Patients with symptoms over 3 months can respond in the first month or spend between 3-6 months until complete resolution. 42% centralize (Manual Therapy; May et al, 2012) and therefore have a faster improvement.

After treatment: What now?

After the treatment phases are over, passing through the problem resolution and the complete recovery of function, the patient needs to keep their basic exercise 1 to 2 times a day, as prevention. The maintenance exercise is defined by your Physiotherapist specialized in MDT and reduces the chances of recurrence by up to 70%.

The Method beyond Mechanical Treatment

The role of the Method is to give the Physical Therapist and their patients a real sense of the clinical condition and propose the most appropriate mechanical treatment. Thus, it is possible to optimize the recovery time and evaluate the possibility of conservative treatment or the need for other approaches, such as drug intervention, multidisciplinary treatments, steroidal blockages or, in rare cases, surgery.
